Parent Observation Week

October 30, 2017 @ 8:45 am - November 3, 2017 @ 11:30 am

A week prior to the conferences we invite parents to attend Observation Week. This is a time that parents can sign up to conduct an observation of their child prior to their conference. BMS provides an observation form to help guide parents with their observations to help identify specific behaviors, interactions with others and level of engagement in the classroom.

Although this is only a ‘snapshot’ of a child’s typical day, often times it provides useful insight which has proven helpful for both parents and teachers to discuss during their conference time. I strongly urge parents to take advantage of this opportunity, especially if you are new to the Primary environment. Observations will take place Oct 30 – Nov 3.

OBSERVATION GUIDE:

At scheduled times throughout the year, BMS welcomes the parents of enrolled children to visit the classroom. The parent observation is an opportunity for you to get a glimpse of what life is like in a Montessori classroom. In order to give you as clear a picture as possible, we ask that you observe the following procedure. We also include a guide on the following page for observing and interpreting what you see.

Classroom observations will take place outside the classroom from the observation window (with the exception of room 109, parents will observe from inside the classroom). Please remember to not encourage your child to wave at you or focus on you while you are at the window. Children may come up to you during the course of your observation. Please try not to engage them in conversation. A polite “Hello” and a direct response as to who you are is fine; then quietly ask the child to return to work. The children understand that observers come to watch them working and they will understand your response in that context.

The teacher will not be able to take time from their classroom duties to converse with you during or immediately after your observation. If questions occur to you while you are watching, please write them down on the paper provided. We will be glad to answer these questions by telephone or in person at a later date during the Parent Teacher Conference.
